For each
scenario below, choose the most appropriate answer from the list above. Each option
may be used once, more than once or not at all.
1. 23-year-old lady complains of painful urination, abdominal pain,
fever and rigors. On examination, you notice some tenderness one on side of her
abdomen. The medical student informs you that her urine dipstick showed the
presence of nitrites and leukocytes.
2. 31-year-old gentleman has been going more frequently to the bathroom
and tells you he notices burning pain on urination. During the last 2 weeks, he
has also noticed a swelling in his right knee. On examination, your medical
student is keen to point out the presence of balanitis
ciricinata and a redness of the eyes.
3. 39-year-old gentleman rushes into your clinic complaining of pain
during urination and perineal pain. With your
superior communication skills, you gather that he is infertile and sometimes
notices bleeding at the end of urination. Your keen medical student is quick to
perform a DRE and informs you of a hard and irregular prostate. Urine analysis
shows sterile pyuria. As he leaves your clinic a box of zidovudine falls onto the floor.
4. An especially promiscuous 21-year old male medical student comes to
your clinic complaining of dysuria and itching
between voids. He swears that his last sexual partner looked ÔinfectedÕ. Pain
is worst during the first morning void and after alcohol consumption. Your
medical student is perplexed at the absence of any systemic symptoms (fever,
chills, sweats, nausea).
5. On the district line, a talkative 50-year-old lady tells you she
suffers from pelvic pain, urinary frequency, urgency and nocturia
for over 9 months. Simple remedies have not helped and she tells you there is
no active genital herpes, discharge or mass lesions. She has not had previous
radiation therapy.
